This summer, P.S. ARTS and the Paramount Farming Company teamed up to provide 6 weeks of arts instruction to students at Kettleman City Elementary, Avenal Elementary, and Tamarack Elementary in the Reef Sunset Unified School District. Using a “rotating arts instruction” model, P.S. ARTS provided two full weeks of instruction in music, theater, and dance to students at the three schools.

Evo Bluestein, an accomplished folk musician, led the dance component of the camp. Students learned Square Dances, Contra Dances, English Country Dances, and Mexican Dances, just to name a few! The students mastered these steps in days and had a lot of fun while learning them.

The music portion of the Summer Day Camp was taught by Christine Montanez, Vice Principal and Music Director at ACEL Fresno Charter High School. Students engaged in lessons about rhythm, tempo, and percussion that led up to performances at each school. It was amazing to see what the students were able to accomplish in just two short weeks!

P.S. ARTS’ Theater Teaching Artist Pedro Rivas explored concepts in drama with the students during his rotation. Mr. Rivas led improvisational activities that taught students the basics of performance and improvisation.

Students learned how to express emotions through their facial expressions and body movements, and even had the opportunity to perform short skits!

We had a great time working and teaching this summer in the Central Valley, and we’re sure our students had a wonderful time too! A special thanks goes out to the Paramount Farming Company for making this enriching program possible!
