P.S. Arts creating a visual representation

By Jacob Campbell, Communications Associate

Classes are officially back in session, and we’ve got an exciting 25th anniversary year planned at P.S. ARTS! For some, summertime is filled with relaxing beach days and weekend trips, but this summer has been a whirlwind at P.S. ARTS. We’ve been hard-at-work preparing for our upcoming event Taste of Venice, planning our new programs in 13 School Districts, training new staff and faculty members, publicly launching a $1M matching campaign towards the P.S. ARTS Endowment, and — as you may have noticed — designing a new website and anniversary logo to mark this major milestone for P.S. ARTS.

Introduing P.S. ARTS' new, responsive website!

We invite you to explore all that our new website has to offer (check it out on your smartphone or tablet as well!). My personal favorite sections are Our Model, which details what we do and how we do it, and Our Resources, a compilation of internal and external arts education tools and ideas for students, parents, teachers, school administrators, and arts advocates!

As an arts education organization, we thought it was only fitting that we share our creative process for developing our new look & feel and transforming the website you see today from idea to reality!

Research
We loved our old logo, but with all the ways in which we’ve grown as organization it felt like it was the right time to spice it up a bit with a more contemporary flair! We began the process with a survey of P.S. ARTS staff and supporters asking questions like, “If P.S. ARTS were a person, who would we be?” and, “When you think of P.S. ARTS, what are the first three things that come to mind?” We loved the wide range of answers which helped us get a sense of our organizational identity. We also did an assessment of our logo landscape to see how we fit in with other similar organizations and help further align ourselves with those working to provide crucial arts experiences for students and families.

After we got a sense of who we were, we had the exciting challenge of creating a visual representation of that essence. We strove to honor our history, acknowledge our growth since merging with Inside Out Community Arts, and forecast the future of P.S. ARTS. We spent time analyzing our existing visual elements – looking for patterns and possibilities – and, of course, we turned to our students for inspiration.

Logo inspiration from our students!

Taking all of these elements of P.S. ARTS into consideration, we redesigned our iconic “A” as a symbolic representation of our multi-faceted organization. Each shape within the “A” represents our program types (Classroom Studio, Extended Learning, Community Engagement, and Educator Training), our disciplines (Dance, Music, Theater, and Visual Arts), and our goals (Excellence, Engagement, Environment, and Student Success). Our new logo!Application
Once we arrived at our final design, our friends at Citrus Studios helped us transform our new look into this beautiful website. Collaborating with the Citrus Team was such a pleasure, and we couldn’t be more pleased with the results! What do you think? We’d love to hear your feedback.

Like I said, it’s been a busy summer, but being able to share our stories in a new, fresh, (and mobile-friendly) way is so worth the long hours. We have many more surprises up our sleeves so be on the lookout for more updates throughout our 25th anniversary year!
