Edison Elementary School

Edison Elementary is part of the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District and serves approximately 434 Kindergarten through fifth grade students. Led by Principal Lori Orum, Edison Elementary offers a unique dual immersion program where students learn to understand, speak, read and write in both English and Spanish. While classes at Edison Elementary are taught in two languages, they follow the same state curriculum frameworks and grade level content standards as all public elementary schools in California. P.S. ARTS has provided Edison Elementary with arts education since 2004 and currently offers theater arts with Martha Ramirez-Oropeza.

Free or Reduced Cost Meal (FRPM) Program: This is a federal program administered by the US Department of Agriculture.  Participation in the program is by application and is based on the income of the child’s parent or guardian.  A child’s family income must fall below 185% of the Federal Poverty Level to qualify for reduced-cost meals, or below 130% of the Federal Poverty Level to qualify for free meals.  Not all eligible children are enrolled in the program, so these numbers do not reflect all low-income school-age children.  Currently, 73% of P.S. ARTS students are enrolled in the Free or Reduced Cost Meal Program.

English Language Learner (ELL) Students: English Language Learner students are classified based on assessment procedures that determine they lack the clearly defined English language skills of listening comprehension, speaking, reading and writing necessary to succeed in the school’s regular instructional programs.  Currently, 45% of P.S. ARTS students are English Language Learners.
